Wine quiz

The wine quiz that finds the bottle you would never have picked yourself

Nine quick questions about what you already reach for. No right answers, and "not sure" is an option whenever a grape comes up. At the end we point you at one South African bottle that fits what you told us.

Nine quick taps

One tap per question, then your name and email, then the match. Pick the answer closest to you; there are no wrong ones.

A palate, not a score

This is a wine preference quiz, not a knowledge test. It reads what you like, not what you know.

One South African bottle

You get one match from a list of South African wines, with the grape, the body, the flavour profile and why it fits.

What the quiz asks

All nine questions, so you know what you are in for. Each one is multiple choice; pick the answer that is closest, not the one that sounds best.

  1. How often does wine make an appearance in your life?

Weekends only, a few times a week, most days in moderation, or you are basically the sommelier of your friend group.

  2. When it comes to wine, which statement best fits you?

From "I know what I like" to "I'll try anything once". This changes how a wine outside your usual grape is scored.

  3. What type of wine do you reach for most often?

Red, white, rosé, sparkling, or dessert and fortified. "I don't have a usual" is a real answer with its own path through the quiz.

  4. Which varietal do you usually go for?

The grapes change with your last answer. Reds run from Pinot Noir and Merlot to Shiraz, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon; whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc to Chardonnay and Viognier. Each grape list ends with "not sure".

  5. Which flavours are you most drawn to?

In plain words. For reds: smooth and soft, bold and spicy, rich and complex, or earthy and savoury. For whites: fresh and fruity, creamy and full, aromatic, or crisp and dry.

  6. How adventurous are you with trying new wines?

Well-known wineries, newcomers if they are good value, small wineries you have never heard of, or the more obscure the better.

  7. What's your preferred price range for a bottle?

Under R100, R100 to R200, R200 to R300, or R300 and up. Wines in your band score highest and the band next to it a little less, so the result can still land outside it.

  8. If we were to surprise you, what would you want?

A twist on what you already drink, a completely new grape, a new region, or an unusual style: natural, skin-contact, odd blends.

  9. What excites you most about discovering new wines?

Hidden gems and indie wineries, impressing friends, expanding your palate, or getting out of your comfort zone.

What you get back

One bottle. The results page names it, gives the grape, the body (light, medium or full) and the flavour profile, and says in a sentence why it fits what you told us. Where the wine has a shop link there is a buy button. You can share the match, or run the quiz again for another one.

The match is scored from the wine you reach for, the grape, the flavour you are drawn to, how far you let it stray from your usual (question two) and your price band. The list behind it is South African and covers red, white, rosé, sparkling and sweet or fortified wines.

Before the result we ask for a name and an email address, and we save them with your answers and your match. Marketing email is a separate tick box on the same form, and the privacy policy says what we keep.

Who it is for

  • Beginners. If a wine list makes you pick the second cheapest, say "I don't have a usual" and the quiz asks about flavours in plain words instead of grapes.
  • People in a rut. The same Sauvignon Blanc every Friday? Say how adventurous you feel and the match is allowed to step one grape family sideways.
  • Buying for someone else. Answer as them.

Or find out blind, with friends

The quiz works from what you say you like. A blind tasting finds out what you actually like: labels hidden, everyone scoring on their own phone, the reveal at the end. A Tasted box arrives with the wines sealed and numbered. The Discovery Box has two wines, the Premium and Reserve boxes have three, and one box is made for 2 to 10 players. Boxes start at R365. Delivery is R65 across South Africa, free on orders over R1000.

Making a night of it? The dinner party games guide lists eight games that work at the table, the blind tasting among them.

Questions people ask about the wine quiz

How long does the wine quiz take?

Nine multiple-choice questions, one tap each, then your name and email, then your match. Nothing to type except those two.

Is it a wine knowledge test?

No. There are no right answers. It asks what you reach for, which grape and flavour you like, how adventurous you feel and what you like to spend, and scores a list of wines against that. It is a palate quiz, not an exam.

Which wine should I drink if I do not know what I like?

Pick "I don't have a usual" on the third question. The quiz then asks about flavours in plain words, fruity or creamy or spicy or earthy or sweet, and matches from there. Beginners get a bottle, not a reading list.

What does the quiz recommend?

One South African bottle from the list we keep for the quiz, which covers red, white, rosé, sparkling and sweet or fortified wines. You see the grape, the body, the flavour profile and a line on why it fits. Take it again for another match.

Is this a South African wine quiz?

Yes, in the way that matters: every wine it can match you with is South African and the prices are in rand. It is not a trivia quiz about South African wine facts.

Why do you ask for my email?

It is how we know who got which match: we save your name and email with your answers and the wine you matched. Marketing email is a separate tick box on the same form; leave it unticked and you get none. The privacy policy says what we keep.

Can I take the wine quiz more than once?

Yes. The results page has a "Try Another Quiz" button. Change your answers and you may get a different bottle.
